Twenty years have gone by since his death, which occurred on December 20, 1991, in solitude and poverty in a faraway residence on the outskirts of Milan, his last, dismal abode.

He was one of the most popular and overpaid stars of the Italian scene of the postwar period with continued success for nearly 50 years in theater and more than 100 films under his belt, also abroad. To many Italians, one of the most familiar faces on TV.

Today, his remains rest in peace inside the Monumentale cemetery in Milan, among the "distinguished citizens" (as reads the inscription at the entrance), who gave pride to the "moral capital" of the country. Chiari had long been a "pariah" as far as his profession, always on the black list for his chronic delays, crazy antics and genetic unreliability, not to mention some glaring legal cases. A womanizer and a squanderer as well as a free man always thinking outside the box.

This is the first book ever on his body of work. One the most original, prolific and beloved public figures of the Italian scene faded into oblivion for so long is just another paradox in Walter Chiari’s history.
